Weve improved the experience ten fold by revisiting the way our players interact with game modes and each other. In previous versions of Battalion and for many of our casual community, Arcade felt somewhat lacklustre, something we have never disagreed with, a spare part in a much bigger machine but one we intend on re-inventing as we proceed.
By re-adding modes that you loved from day one to those requested across multiple avenues you can be sure we have something for you in Battalion Think youre capable of doing all the heavy lifting? Now it's time to put it to the test. Up to 12 players face off in the ultimate rumble, selecting their choice of weaponry as you fight to the top of the scoreboard. A slew of wiggles and weaves as you land the perfect shot or keep up the momentum as you make your way through the server decimating everything in your path.
A classic game mode were excited to include in our Arcade rotation full time. As we'll be including it in the main arcade queue this means well see the inclusion of the M1 Garand. We understand how this may frustrate the rifles only purists amongst us, but it's important to give players the ability to learn how to counter the bolt-action rifles with the Garand as well as allowing some players who are now voted into a rifles only game to have an alternate option with a gun that is ultimately- still a rifle.
We firmly believe that our community should get to decide how they experience the game in a casual environment and were now glad to give you the option. The choice is now yours. They provide the foundation for key, round winning moments, or block crucial information to prevent an opponent's advances.
Over the last year weve constantly been working towards balancing and creating a formidable smoke. A smoke that does exactly what it says on the tin, and dare I say, we think were pretty close. Weve improved the smoke so that players will no longer be able to turn the edge of the smoke client side using their mouse as a way to gain an advantage.

We've nearly come full circle with some interesting features to best assess your casual needs! For those of you not in the know, the MSP, as we like to call it, involves a number of fixes, changes, and quality of life solutions. Its our way of really getting to grips with what our players would like to see without disrupting the flow of progression or jumping the gun too soon. Quality of life you say? Quality of life is the standard of health, comfort, and happiness experienced by an individual or group.
The Battalion community is our group and these small intricacies and additions are our way of implementing features youve asked for. One example of this would be call outs and map locations under the radar - a small change can make a world of difference for communication, whether a veteran or stepping into the server for the first time, these are exactly the kind of quality of life changes well be looking to make a more permanent fixture.
Current smoke MSP Smoke The greatest teams and tacticians know exactly how, when, and where to deploy smokes but often you never see the why. Why do smokes act and behave the way they do? Whats the difference between a server and client side smoke and why do we lean one way more than the other. Luckily for all those interested, we have one of Bulkheads brightest on standby to talk you through the process, Mr. James Tatum.
In order to explain how smokes work, we're going to have to cover some base terms first. Stay with me, and by the end of this you'll understand why we use the combination we do, and why smokes will never be fully server sided. First up, seeds and pseudo-random number generators. You may have heard that random numbers generated by any form of computer are not truly random. This is true.
In any computational environment, we use a seed and an algorithm to generate pseudo-random numbers, which appear to be random enough for most things to get away with. We start with a value, which we call the seed. Lets say This value is chucked into a mathematical equation and a new value is spat out, lets say The 42 that was originally used is then modified by a constant maybe just incrementing by 1 and when the algorithm is ran again on this new number a different value is given, As long as the seed is the same each time you run the algorithm, you will always get the same values out of the random generator in the same order.
For this reason, most random generators use the ticks of a system or something equally unique as a seed. Next we need to talk about particle effects. Particle effects use emitters, which spawn sprites. There can be hundreds or thousands of sprites generated by an emitter, and then we can have multiple emitters in each effect.
Each sprite can have some transparency on it, and once the sprites are layering over one another we end up with a cool effect, and the emitters themselves spawn the sprites based on a seed. This is where the pseudo-randomness comes in. Particle effects can be expensive to run, which is why its important to keep a close eye on performance when doing anything with particle effects. Okay, so you understand how random works in a computational environment, and you now know the basics of how a particle effect works.
Lets get into what Battalion does. When you throw a smoke grenade, the arc and position of the grenade is actually calculated on the server and then networked to the clients. This way, a smoke or explosive grenade can never land somewhere different for different clients. The position where the smoke lands causes the particle effect to be spawned on all clients, but not on the server. This means all clients have the same smoke in the same position, but we dont have the insane performance cost of networking the smoke from the server to client.
Lets talk about that performance cost. In order to network a particle effect, youd have to take each of the generated particles sprites on the server and send its position to each client. When we consider there can be thousands of particles in a single effect, we might be sending thousands of positions each frame to each client.
For 10 players in a server, and at 60fps, for just particles, that would be , pieces of positional data sent in a second. We could definitely optimise that down, and wed actually need to, because that would block the net driver and disconnect everyone but you can see how out of control the performance of networked particle effects can get. The next thing to consider is the seed. If this was different on each client, it would cause the smoke to look different.
For this reason, we keep it the same on all clients, at all times. Every time you throw a smoke, it will look the same every time because the seed value is the same. So thats how smokes work in Battalion The position is sent from the server, so its the same. The seed is always the same, because its a constant value fixed inside the smoke asset itself.
The smoke always looks the same, because both the position and the seed are the same for all clients. There would be no benefit to networking the smoke particle effect from the server, but there would be a significant performance cost, and with the nature of Battalion being a competitive fps, we are always trying to get the best performance and competitive fairness out of everything we do.
Hope that explains everything. Recently we came across some boosts that gave players that utilised it an unfair advantage on Liberation, this has been addressed in the latest hotfix and would like to thank those of you on Reddit that help us combat these issues. Games often vary in length and we understand the levels of concentration required to play at your best.
To reward this, and in light of our recent change to a Level cap. We have significantly increased the XP gain from each match, win or lose! The new XP model for Wartide is now 4 times higher than it was originally, making it easier for those of you who invest the time to grind out for the skins you love. Daily Challenges xp will now reward xp Quick Fire Challenges xp will now reward xp A Hardline Approach Often player experiences vary, and here at Bulkhead were all for people playing the way they want as long as it doesnt ruin the experience for those around them.
In light of this we will be taking a hardline approach for those that exploit our game modes and XP models in other regions specifically to farm bots and create an unfair and often toxic gaming environment. This often results in an unenjoyable experience for many and with the adequate proof provided to us video, screenshot or otherwise on a case by case scenario we will be proactively banning players temporarily to combat any issues that arise. In future, and namely our Mid Season Patch, we will be making changes to completely disincentive and discourage those that abuse the systems in place with added positive reinforcement for playing objectives.

In light of this well be adding 2 extra maps to HQ for you to sink your muddy boots into. Combining the power of the Russian armoury with our relentless HQ mode will give the Axis a true test as you fight your way across the snowy streets of Vanguard and the hotly contested railways and bunkers of Goldrush! For those who have recently joined us, heres a quick run down of the gamemode. In this mode, teams must capture and hold a set point HQ that is randomly spawned in the map.. The longer it is held, the more points that team gains.
However, the team that holds the headquarters only has 1 life each until the objective is either successfully defended or overrun by the ever respawning enemies! The best HQ players will coordinate with their team to enforce an ironclad defensive perimeter around a captured headquarters in order to hold it. With a full week of HQ already under your belt, we dont doubt youve devised a daring divulsion for attacking the enemy and holding down what's rightfully yours and cant wait to see your approach on our new maps.

Where do we go now? The future for Battalion is as intriguing as it is exciting. BattleRank Season 5 - Double the Size! As our seasons now last 2 months, we have doubled the amount of rewards in Season 5 to The rewards are spread across ranks instead of Once you reach level , every time you rank up , etc you will receive one of the new Gladiator War Chests!
That's why we'll be pulling Invasion, Docks, and Savoia from the competitive pool for Season 5. We will gradually reintroduce these maps, beginning with Invasion, which is aimed to be tested in our first mid season patch in one months time. We will heavily be involving the community in the map design process.
Invasion's rework is being streamed regularly on our lead dev Brammertron's twitch channel. The critical status is indicated to the player through new audio queues and increased intensity in the blood effects on screen. The player will not regenerate any health for 5 seconds. The player will know when they have fully regenerated by the relaxed breath sound queue.
This has been fixed for Vanguard, Manorhouse, and Liberation. Community Manager Starting Next Week! Next week our community manager will be joining us and getting into the nitty gritty parts of the community! But don't worry, we want to keep a really strong connection between the devs and the players. Summer Mid Season Update The mid season patch gives us an opportunity to change any meta and balancing issues.
It also allows us to test out a new map rework. On September 2nd , we will push a game update that amongst other things will contain the new rework for Invasion. The map will not be added to the competitive pool straight away but it will enter Unranked 5v5 in the Special Event queue. The idea is that this gives the community a whole month to test out our rework of Invasion and let us know what changes need to be made. We believe this is the best way for us to improve one of our biggest issues, map design.

Battalion s launch was a huge success. Success we knew the game had the potential to have - but couldnt quite believe ourselves when it started to happen. We have smashed sales expectations, smashed player count expectations peak was the dream and recently raised our review score from Mostly Negative to Very Positive. This was done through hard work and absolute support from our community.
However - theres one question thats on everyones lips. Whats next? Were doubling down on Battalion This success has meant post release plans have taken a little longer than we would have wanted to spin up, prepare and announce. However, with our belief in this project were reinvesting back into Battalion to turn this IP into a long term top tier FPS. We know Battalion can be better. We know the game isnt perfect. Were a growing independant studio. We have made mistakes, we wear our hearts on our sleeves and we respond as earnestly and honestly as we can about development to our players because this game is something more than just another FPS - Battalion is the last remaining chance we have as gamers to keep the raw thrill of a skilled and competitive fast paced FPS relevant within this rapidly changing landscape.
Our publishing friends at Square Enix Collective understands that significance and will be helping us support this community every step of the way. In the short term however - some players want more content, some players want map redesigns, some players want overall polish and stability, some players want the competitive scene to grow with leagues and tournaments to play for We have a plan to deliver on ALL of those wishes.
Weve been reading every single piece of feedback since launch and have worked to create a roadmap with a bunch of new content, gamemodes, polish and fixes that address all of these concerns. This is why well be releasing a development roadmap very soon - prior to the launch of BattleRank Season 5! Weve doubled down our investment into Battalion by expanding our development team significantly purely for this post release content and we cant wait to share our plans with you.
This will mean more content, more players and more polish based on your feedback. Competitive Roadmap Begins Battalion managed to capture the hopes and dreams of young and veteran FPS lovers worldwide.
Were currently in the process of organising Battalions competitive future. But its important that our players know that we arent just blindly throwing six figure prize pools at tournaments in the next two months when the game isnt ready. Were under no illusions that Battalion as a brand has a way to go before it can enter the top tier of FPS titles that we intend it to eventually become. This is why were happy to announce today the first step in our three tiered plan for competitive play Ran and organised by our friends over at The Plays, we want to introduce players to our competitive league format with some nice prize pool bonuses for playing.
Open League - Open to everyone. At the end of the season the four best teams will progress into the playoffs with their share of prize pool and a chance to qualify for the premier division. The Relegation cup at the end of the season will be the one and only way to qualify for the premier division. Everyone has the opportunity to graduate from the Open Division into the premier division. Premier League - 2 groups, each group has 6 teams. The first 2 of each group at the end of the season will go to playoffs.
The top 6 teams will get their share of the prize pool depending on their placement in playoffs. The last team of each group will go into the relegation cup against the top 4 teams of Open Leagueand they will fight for their spot in the premier division.

Patch Notes Removed the pesky floating box on Manorhouse v2 in Arcade modes. Disabled vote kicking on all modes that arent competitive to reduce abuse of the feature. Rewards section of the post match screen should stay up for a little longer.
Chat history is now logged to console. Some players have noticed an issue with the level 50 Battlerank skin not animating - were hoping to have a fix for this deployed next week alongside other community reported fixes. To replace the shotgun sendoff special event, were trialing an unranked version of Wartide in its place. It's important for players to understand that we need to be careful when implementing new playlists, as it further splits the playerbase between matchmaking queues - which could end up detrimental to the Battalion experience long term.
Another reason for this trial is to test for issues and bugs related to bots within Wartide. We would like to introduce bots to Faceit competitive play to alleviate the impact of leavers allowing you to take control of a bot after you die if a teammate has left.
However we want to use this trial to identify bugs and issues that can be fixed using the casual unranked setting before rolling out this change to competitive play. We were concerned with 5v5 being too intense for new players. Hopefully with this playlist and its increased 10v10 player count, we can encourage new players to transition from arcade and learn the basic rules of Wartide, including map layouts and mechanics before queueing into competitive play.
Experienced players on the other hand will be able to take a break from competitive, frag out like it's arcade and indirectly show new players who are spectating tips, tricks and how to play in clutch situations. Unranked Wartide Rules 10v Knife Round Enabled. BattleRank Season 4 With the end of a season comes a new one! Exactly like last season - reach level 50 and you get the animated skin! A combination of changes have made the weapon effective at close ranges only - making the weapon much less of a threat overall.
Due to community feedback and the obvious power of the shotguns they have been altered to become situational weapons that are intended to be played in close quarters ranges and off angles rather than an all round weapon choice.
This means there will be positions where the cheap 2 coin shotgun will have its place to allow you to surprise and pick off unprepared players and take their weapon as your own. Shotgun Maximum Range Heavily Reduced The longest possible range of the shotgun has been heavily reduced from units to units - meaning all shotgun pellets now become entirely ineffective after the unit range. This will stop players being able to finish off low health players with the shotgun at long range.
Players will need to learn this new effective distance before taking shots that previously would have connected. At its new longest possible range units - all pellets need to hit a target to get a 1 shot kill. In the majority of cases youll need to fire pumps at this distance to hit enough pellets for a kill. The closer you are the tighter the spread! However - to help with communication weve decided to bring in the spread of the crosshair to more accurately portray where pellets will land - this will hopefully reduce the frustrating moments where a player at close range who has only part of their crosshair over the enemy misses due to none of the pellets connecting.
Standing has the furthest reach. Added profanity filter to ingame chat to help reduce abusive language Fixed collision issues on multiple maps. What a month it has been for Battalion , coming back from the jaws of Early Access and being propelled back into the FPS spotlight. To increase your chances of reaching level 50 before the weekend is over, were introducing double XP - which will run for this weekend only until the launch of BattleRank Season 4! This weekend will be your last chance to decimate with the shotgun in its current state before they become a blast from the past and to celebrate that were running a weekend only event in our limited time only queue called Shotgun Sendoff This is purely a fun event for the last few days of Season 3 and will help you get those sweet experience points to level your BattleRank before Season 4 begins.
Having more time also enables us to address the issues in a clearer way by gathering all of the feedback and addressing the correct issues rather than knee jerk responses based on individual clips. Balance will always be an ongoing process - but with Mondays patch will come a new meta that will evolve throughout that season. Fix for seeing people in smoke when above the smoke. Maps All maps - removed pixel peek through wooden pallets under barrels. Liberation - Removed market stand on A site where players could prone behind a wooden door and couldnt be seen. Manorhouse v2 - Added walls behind B site platform to improve visibility by helping players in Manor window see axis players who are peeking them from the B site platform.
Vanguard - Fixed seeing players reflections through smoke. Audio Fix for footstep noise when changing stance from crouch to prone. Hitmarker and headshot sounds effects should now play for spectators. Misc Voting is now disabled on 1v1 servers. Adding a button in the server browser to filter by modded servers. Altered the way the game behaves when handling no Steam connection.
This will now display an error message at the main menu and force the user to close the game, rather than crashing.
